The mulch layer

Close-up of the mulch layer

This is what is left on the ground: shredded sage and grass. It holds moisture and keeps the dirt from blowing, and it breaks down on its own over the next year or two. It also sits low and flat, so it carries fire far less than standing sage did.

A few things to know. The mulch will settle and darken over the winter. Grass will come back up through it in the spring. Big sagebrush does not sprout back from the cut stumps, but new sage can come in from seed over the years, and a light pass every few years keeps it down. If you want the ground seeded or worked up for anything, give us a call and we can look at it.

Thank you for having us out, David. If you are happy with how it turned out, an honest Google review helps a small outfit like ours a lot. And if a neighbor asks who did the work, we would be glad to come take a look at their place too. — Wyatt
